Wiltshire Community History - Anyone researching Wiltshire history will find the Wiltshire Studies community history pages within the Wiltshire County Council website of great use. This gives access to 'potted histories' of Wiltshire towns and villages, and to digital images of related maps, photographs and printed material.

Victoria County History of Wiltshire - The Victoria History of the Counties of England was founded in 1899 and dedicated to Queen Victoria. In 1947 work began on the Wiltshire volumes. Volumes I to V in the Wiltshire series are on general topics relating to the whole county. Volumes VI to XVII are topographical volumes, containing the histories of individual parishes and towns. Around three quarters of the work on Wiltshire has already been finished. The main aim of VCH Wiltshire is now to complete the remaining topographical volumes. Most volumes of the Wiltshire edition are now available online through British History Online.

Window on Wiltshire's Heritage allows you to access a wealth of information on the county's unique heritage, including nature, archaeology, museums, architecture, records and archives, photo exhibitions, art and local history.

Wiltshire Family History Society - The society actively transcribes and indexes various records relating to family history from baptisms to court records. They have an ever growing number of members and can put researchers in touch with others studying the same family, as well as offering general genealogical advice and assistance.

Genuki - A good starting place for family history. It has been compiled by volunteers all over the world, and cross-references other useful websites, comprising of more indexes and links to records held online and in institutions.

Ancestry - one of the largest commercial sites which gives access to copies of original records together with family trees. It is free to use this service at the History Centre and at public libraries throughout Wiltshire but requires a subscription for home use.

The National Archives based at Kew have a growing number of on-line resources including guides to reading old hand-writing and translating Latin which could be useful for all kinds of research involving historical records. They also have a number of projects to digitise certain popular records such as wills and military service records for availability online.
