Planning A Visit

Welcome to the History Centre. These pages should provide all the information you need to plan your visit and make the most of your time in the search rooms. All visits to the History Centre must be pre-booked, documents can be both pre-ordered and ordered on the day, and food and drink may be consumed in the reception area. Booking System

To ensure we can provide the best possible service to customers we have introduced a booking system for all visits. Please complete this booking form and return via This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Also, please read the accompanying Frequently Asked Questions and the Test and Trace policy document. If you have problems accessing the booking form, email or telephone the History Centre and a form will be posted to you.

Spaces are limited so where possible please book your visit a week in advance. The Local Studies Library can be browsed by customers who have booked their visit.

Computers and microform must be pre-booked and documents can be pre-ordered where references are known. 

Our help desk staff will show you how to safely handle original documents but they will be observing physical distancing guidelines. Please bring your own supply of pencils and paper. No pens are allowed in the searchrooms. Please note that bags and coats cannot be brought into the searchrooms, but lockers are available, and staff will be on hand to show you where personal items can be securely stored.

Opening Hours – Until further notice the History Centre is open Tuesdays to Fridays, 9:30am to 5pm. We will be closed Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays.

Photocopying and other Charges

There are no charges for visiting Wiltshire and Swindon Archives but charges do apply if you want to copy any documents. We will advise on what may be copied and the most suitable method. You are welcome to take photographs with your own camera, provided you ask permission first and pay a standard fee. If you wish to publish documents or make lengthy quotations you should first consult a member of staff.
