May is the perfect time to get inspired about local history as it is Local and Community History Month! We’re celebrating with an array of events and exhibitions at libraries across the county.

The aim of the month is to increase awareness of local history and promote history in general. The events and exhibitions will be taking place throughout May including talks, author events, introductions to Ancestry and the British Newspaper Archive, trails and reminiscence sessions.

To mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, many of our events and exhibitions have a wartime theme but there are also other events, such as making the most of maps at Corsham library and talks on pubs in Salisbury, the White Horses of Wiltshire at Westbury, and much, much more. Many events are free to attend.

You can find Local History Month events by exploring Wiltshire Libraries’ What’s on page: https://libraries.wiltshire.gov.uk/what-s-on#/?tag=Local%20history&tag=Family%20history

Also coming up on Saturday 10th May is the free Wiltshire Local History Network day celebrating garden history – all are welcome!
The programme is full of interesting talks about Wiltshire’s garden history, with expert speakers talking about the forgotten gardener of Stourhead, Salisbury’s lost garden, Draycot parks and gardens, and early water features. Our Keynote speaker is Dr Todd Gray MBE, who will be helping us discover how to research the history of a garden, and to look at the unique features that are often hidden in plain sight.
