Planning A Visit

Welcome to the History Centre. These pages should provide all the information you need to plan your visit and make the most of your time in the search rooms. Any changes to opening times and services will be posted here and on the home page, and also on our social media sites.

Researcher inspecting a volume

To maximise your time at the History Centre, and to avoid disappointment in the event our searchroom is full, we strongly recommend that you book your visit in advance. If you have not booked in advance we will do our best to help you, however if the searchroom is busy or if your enquiry is particularly complex (rights of way, planning enquiries, or boundary disputes for example), there may be a delay in locating documents for your research.

Our help desk staff will be on hand to give advice on reading and interpreting documents, however unfortunately we are not able offer in-depth research assistance in person. We are currently only able to offer a limited amount of advice free of charge; for in-depth or complex research, we offer a research service at a cost of £38 per hour. Many historic records have not survived to be transferred to the archive and so it may not always be possible to find the answers you are looking for; if that is the case, we will always suggest other avenues of research where possible. If your research relates to a legal matter (such as a boundary dispute) we will do our very best to help locate any surviving documents that might assist you, but please note that we are not qualified to offer advice on the legal ramifications of the documents in our care.

You can pre-order up to ten items for your visit but you are welcome to order more on the day if you have time for them. Pre-ordering is advisable to save you time and ensure you get to see what you require, but is not essential. If you have any queries please get in touch by email in the first instance or telephone 01249 705500.

Computers and microform are limited in number and we advise pre-booking.

Our help desk staff can show you how to safely handle original documents. Please bring your own supply of pencils and paper. No pens are allowed in the searchrooms. Please note that bags and coats cannot be brought into the searchrooms, but lockers are available, and staff will be on hand to show you where personal items can be securely stored.

There are no charges for visiting Wiltshire and Swindon Archives but charges do apply if you want to copy any documents. We will advise on what may be copied and the most suitable method. You are welcome to take photographs with your own camera, provided you ask permission first and pay a standard fee (see our copying charges for further detail). If you wish to publish documents or make lengthy quotations you should first consult a member of staff.

Food and drink may be consumed in the reception area.

Proof of identification is not required to visit us. However, if you wish to join as a member and receive a membership card then a form of identification will be required upon joining (in the form of a CARN card, driving licence, Wiltshire library card, allowance book, official bill/invoice, bank statement or passport). Membership is free of charge and worthwhile if you will be visiting us often. Membership forms are available from reception.

See our Accessibility page for a more detailed introduction to your first visit.
