Different kinds of maps survive in considerable numbers from the 17^th century. The principal categories are commercial, estate, enclosure, tithe and Ordnance Survey. There is no common scale to these maps until the arrival of the Ordnance Survey in the 19^th century. Most important of all the coverage is uneven until the Ordnance Survey, and therefore what maps may exist for one village or town will not necessarily be available for another.
