This biography begins with the author’s memories of his childhood, his father’s tragic death when he was only 4 and his growing interest in the railway. The book goes on to chart Bob’s work and life on the railways in a number of different roles, including shunter and signalman, at a variety of Wiltshire sites.
Bob has much of interest to share; the story of the Chippenham railway horses making their own way back to their stables via the refreshment rooms where they would receive sugar lumps was one of my favourites, to the time, as signalman at Box, he received a cup of tea from a locomotive driver who was waiting at the signal for a goods train to pass. Bob notes that the passengers probably thought that the only reason they’d had to wait was so that he could get his tea!
