Statement of Intent

The Conservation and Museums Advisory Service (CMAS) is committed to promoting sustainability, this means conducting our business in a manner that acknowledges, measures and takes responsibility for our direct and indirect impact on the environment. This statement supports Wiltshire Council’s pledge to become carbon neutral by 2030.

Our Sustainability Policy is based upon the following principles:

• To comply with, and exceed where practicable, all applicable legislation, regulations and codes of practice.
• To integrate sustainability considerations into all our business decisions.
• To ensure that all staff are fully aware of our Sustainability Policy and are committed to implementing and improving it.
• To make clients and suppliers aware of our Sustainability Policy and encourage them to adopt sound sustainable management practices.
• To review and continually strive to improve our sustainability performance.

We will conserve energy, dispose of waste responsibly, reduce pollutants and other by-products our activities may generate and promote sustainability in line with Wiltshire Council’s Environmental Policy. By conducting our business in this manner, we align our long-term success with the earth’s ecological well-being and create enduring benefits for our clients, employees, and communities.

Aims

1. Reduce and Reuse
   1. Find a purpose for used items before considering disposal
   2. Implement a regular cleaning program for used materials
   3. Encourage and be proactive in silica gel regeneration programs
   4. Minimise the use of plastics
   5. Produce detailed inventories of supplies to manage purchasing

2. Adopt the Principles of Green Solvents
   1. Make batches sizes in accordance with the work required
   2. Store solvents appropriately to prevent spillage, spoilage and evaporation
   3. Implement a soak cleaning program of glass ware to minimise using solvents
   4. Using solvent selection use the least toxic solvent available
   5. Purchase chemicals / materials from sustainable sources
   6. Implement the use of solvent gels

3. Manage Waste
   1. Implement recycling programs for:
      1. Nitrile Gloves
      2. Metal Tokens
      3. Scrap plastazote / packaging
   2. Implement several waste disposal channels to prevent material entering landfills:
      1. Sharps
      2. Chemicals
      3. Hazardous waste
      4. Recycling
      5. Re-use
      6. General waste

4. Conserve Energy
   1. Monitor energy efficiency of equipment used
      1. When making new purchases consider the most energy efficient item
      2. Ensure old equipment is serviced regularly
   2. Implement energy saving methods
      1. Turn equipment off when not in use
      2. Install timers to ensure equipment is not left on
      3. Implement lab checks to ensure equipment is turned off before end of day
